Town centre traders are preparing for an influx of new customers after a run-down shopping centre underwent a major refurbishment. York Place arcade, in Newcastle, has been struggling to retain business for around 10 years as it fell further and further into disrepair.
But independent traders which have recently moved into the centre have been lobbying the landlord to invest in the site, in a bid to attract more customers. Now the centre has been officially re-launched after work was carried out to lay new floors, ceilings and lighting.
Tomasz Putynkowski set up Polish beauty shop True Obsession the arcade in October.
He said: “When Sainsbury's closed down, businesses in the arcade and the surrounding area started to suffer because people were no longer using it as a cut through to the town It was empty for a long time. Nobody was passing through, it was dying. But now there's a few of us such as Gamepad and Hello Sweetie Cupcakery and the footfall has really started to build.
“When I opened I could see that more people were using the arcade because they could see that businesses had started to move in." Tomasz added: “Now the refurbishment is done we're hoping to attract more independent businesses to York Place and show people that Newcastle does have something going on and that it's a nice place to come to shop and eat".
